In Search of Wisdom: One Philosopher's Journey is the autobiography of Professor Imamichi Tomonobu, a renowned Japanese philosopher who originated many new fields of study, including eco-ethica, metatechnica, urbanica, and calonology. In the book, Professor Imamichi's philosophy is interspersed with his life story: his youthful decision to become a creative thinker, his struggle to rationalize patriotism with opposition to the Second World War, his brief stay in a Roman Catholic novitiate, his reaffirmation of his vocation as a philosopher, his difficulty finding an academic position in postwar Japan because he wishes to originate philosophy rather more comfortable in Europe and takes positions at German and French universities where he gains a reputation as an expert in aesthetics and metaphysics. His international reputation and contacts expand rapidly, and by the time he returns to Japan , he is offered positions at the nation's leading universities. He becomes dean of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Tokyo only to find himself embroiled in violent student protests. He reasons with the students in a creative manner but is aggrieved by the toll taken on his academic work. After the riots end, he resigns as dean to devote himself to furthering eco-ethica –his theory of ethics for today's world.

In the book, the reader is introduced Professor Imamichi's thoughts and aided his progress as a philosopher in search of wisdom.
