Rio Tinto Mongolia LLC in association with the Zorig Foundation are pleased to announce the Rio Tinto Mongolia Tertiary Education Scholarship Programme for the second year. The scholarship programme is designed to develop the capacity of Mongolian nationals to participate in the domestic and international mining economy. The scholarships are targeted at academically talented tertiary students with selection, assisted by an independent group, based on academic performance, demonstrated interest in the mining industry and financial need. Applications are now being accepted from suitably qualified Mongolian nationals to complete the full-time Master of Laws (LLM) postgraduate course in Mineral Law and Policy at the University of Dundee, United Kingdom, commencing January 2008.

The one-year intensive course commences in fall semester and the scholarship covers fees, a living stipend, books, and travel to/from the United Kingdom at an anticipated cost of 17,000 pounds stirling. Applicants must have fluency in both written and spoken English language.
Applicants eligible for consideration should:

  • Already hold a four year undergraduate degree qualification in one of the following disciplines: Law, Economics, Geology, Petroleum or Mining Engineering, Finance.
  • High level of English language competence (generally IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 603 [250 on the computer based test]).
  • Preferably be a recently qualified lawyer having had some post-degree work experience in mining in the government, private sector, or academia.
  • Be between the ages of 25-30 years.

  • Covering letter.
  • Two passport size photographs.
  • Copy of university transcripts.
  • Reference letters from two Mongolian university lecturers who supervised their undergraduate course of study.
  • Letter of reference from the university at which they completed their undergraduate course of study.
  • Evidence of family financial background.
  • Copy of IELTS or TOEFL certificate.
  • An essay of 1,500 words explaining their understanding of the Mongolian mining industry and the issues the industry faces into the future.
