The annual Asian Development Outlook provides a comprehensive economic analysis of 43 economies in developing Asia and the Pacific. This 19th edition examines trends and prospects in Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. The performance of developing Asia in 2006 was exceptional. Aggregate gross domestic product for the region grew at 8.3%, the fastest since 1995. Growth was stimulated by a highly favorable external environment, generally benign domestic circumstances, good economic management, and the fruits of earlier reform efforts. Remarkable growth in the People's Republic of China and India underpinned this regional expansion, with a large number of other countries enjoying vigorous growth. Strong growth looks set for 2007 and 2008. Lower oil prices should heip soothe inflationary pressures, as might any appreciation of regional currencies. Domestic tightening measures already taken in 2006 and followed up in 200? will help guide down both output growth and inflation. Macroeconomic stabilization and structural rebalancing are the biggest challenges facing the region—and to sustain growth, Asia needs to do better at creating jobs. This year's theme, growth amid change, spotlights the complex evolutions that have been associated with successful growth experiences. Most Asian countries will have to continue to "walk on both legs," fostering both industry and services. The following elements are crucial: • high investments that build, expand, and upgrade the range of economic activities providing infrastructure services; • institutions that lower risks and uncertainty for businesses; • markets that support labor mobility and flexibility alongside affordable social protection; • relevant and purposeful education; and • integration with global economic systems.
