Published 2008
ISBN: 978-0-88975-240-5

The key ingredients of economic freedom are personal choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to compete, and the protection of persons and property. Economic Freedom of the World: 2008 Report provides the most comprehensive index of economic freedom available. It uses reproducible measures appropriate for peer-reviewed research.
Economic Freedom of the World has been cited in some 300 academic articles and more than 100 books. The empirical results show that economic freedom increases prosperity, causes greater civil and political freedoms, and leads to other positive outcomes.
Highlights from this year's report:

  • Chile has become the first Latin American nation to reach the top 10 in economic freedom for 2006, the most recent year for which data are available. Data revisions indicate Chile made the top 10 in 2005, with its original ranking of eleventh revised to eighth.
  • International ratings of the Rule of Law in the United States and Canada have declined significantly since 2000.
  • Economic freedom is strongly correlated with political and civil freedoms.
  • Chapter 2, a special research report, indicates that economic freedom reduces poverty. A one-unit increase in the EFW rating between 1980 and 1995 was associated with a 5.2T percentage-point reduction in the $1-per-day poverty rate.

Economic Freedom of the World is published by the Economic Freedom Network, a global network of institutes in 76 nations and territories that promotes economic freedom internationally.
