THE V-DEM APPROACH TO MEASURING DEMOCRACY

Democracy is one of the world’s most discussed ideas, yet one of the hardest to measure. This lecture explores how the V-Dem Project measures democracy through hundreds of detailed indicators and expert assessments across countries over time. Using Mongolia as a case study, Prof. Marquardt will discuss how democratic concepts are translated into measurable data and what these measurements reveal about political systems today.
